Salahaddin, Kurdistan-Iraq, 20 April  - Massoud Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, welcomed the Russian government’s enquiries into opening a consulate in Erbil, Kurdistan’s capital.

Mr Barzani met Sergey Kirchenko, Russia’s special envoy to Iraq, and Vladimir Chamov, Russia’s ambassador to Iraq at his office in Salahaddin.

Mr Kirchenko said that the purpose of his visit was to look into the possibility of opening a Russian consulate in Erbil, which would help to strengthen relations between the KRG and the Russian Federation and the consulates would be an added value between the governments of Kurdistan and Russia.

Mr Kirchenko stressed that President Putin supports this new policy of taking relations with the KRG to a new level.
