Erbil, Kurdistan-Iraq 18
April (Hewler Globe) - Kurdistan University of Hawler, Iraqi
Kurdistan’s first English university, will begin running courses
from the next academic year, Professor Abbas Wali, head of the
university, told reporters in a press conference last Sunday in
Erbil’s Sheraton Hotel.
The establishment of the university comes after the idea was
initially discussed two years ago. Unlike other universities in
Kurdistan, which are lecture-based, the new university will adopt a
new approach.
“It will be a research based university and conducting research in
various fields will be one of its main priorities,” Dr. Motasam
Tatahi, a member of the university’s administrative board, said.
The curriculum and courses will be set and accredited by a British
university.
The university will teach six courses in its first year, including
economics and finance, business and management, sociology and social
Work, political Science and international relations, information
technology and modern history.“ |

At first four hundred students will be admitted to the university
and they will be divided between the six departments,” Professor
Wali stated. “The university is in its first stage. We plan to
expand it in the future by opening new departments, such as
scientific departments. Also we will open MA, MSc. and PhD studies.”
The Kurdistan University of Hawler will be funded by the Kurdistan
Regional Government, but will be administered independently.
“The university will be an independent one, which means it controls
its own works and system of study. It is independent, but financed
by the KRG,” Professor Wali explained.
University administrators were unwilling to comment on the budget
but said that it would not be a limited budget.
Students will not pay tuition fees and high school students in the
Kurdistan Region can apply to study at the university from this
week.
Candidates to study at the university must meet three requirements.
The average of their high school marks must not be less than 75%,
they must take an English language proficiency test and they must be
interviewed.
The degrees of the university will be recognized in Britain and
other European countries, Dr. Tatahi explained. All courses will
last four years, with the first year dedicated to English language
and computer skills.
English will be the teaching language of the university.
“Due to many reasons, including political ones, the Kurdish language
is poor for academic use,” Dr. Tatahi told the Globe.
He also added that the university will try to hire professors and
lecturers who have attained their degrees from Western universities.
The university campus will be in Erbil, and is the fifth in the
Kurdistan Region, after the Universities of Salahadin, Suleimaniah,
Dohuk and Koya.
