Talabani says Kurdish alliance won't turn against Shiite coalition 19.4.2006

BAGHDAD, April 19 (KUNA) -- Iraqi President Jalal Al-Talabani denied reported establishment of a "tentative alliance" in the parliament aligning the Kurdish alliance, the Iraqi Concord Front and the National Iraqi List of Iyad Allawi.

Talabani, speaking to journalists following a meeting with the chief of the Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, Abdel Aziz Al-Hakim, held at SCIRI's headquarters, indicated that the Kurdish alliance "would never take a step against the (Shiite) coalition despite our good relations with the other parties .."

He praised the talks with Al-Hakim, that also involved the U.S. ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, and indicated he was awaiting an answer from the Iraqi parties on holding a session for the parliament.

Talabani's remarks were in response to a statement by Secretary General of the (Sunnite) Iraqi Islamic Party Tareq Al-Hashemi saying that all parliamentary blocs, except for the (Shiite) coalition, agreed in principle on the formation of a new parliamentary coalition to pave way for establishing a national salvation government.

Al-Hashemi had indicated that this option might be resorted to in the event the Shiite coalition failed to choose "a consensus candidate" to succeed Ibrahim Al-Jaafari as the prime minister of the country.

Talabani's bureau was occupied all time today with various visiting officials, in efforts to try resolve the political crisis and reach a consensus on choosing a new premier and forming a cabinet.

These talks Iraq coincided with behind-the-curtain discussions in the southern city of Nejev, involving the supreme Shiite religious guide, Seyyed Ali Sistani, and local officials.

Al-Jaafari, criticized for failing to enforce law and order in the violence-infested country, has insisted on maintaining the post.
