Diyarbakir,
Kurdistan-Turkey, - A court in southeastern Turkey
Kurdish province of Diyarbakir sentenced a
university student on Thursday to 10 months in
prison for holding up a banner emblazoned with the
flag of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK)
alongside the Turkish and the EU flags at a
demonstration last year.
Berat Birtek's lawyer Servet Özen said he would
appeal the ruling.
The Kurdistan and PKK flags are strongly prohibited
in Turkey.
Ankara blames the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK)
for the deaths of more than 30,000 people since the
rebels launched their armed struggle in 1984 for an
independent Kurdish homeland in southeast Turkey.
Both the United States and the European Union regard
the PKK as a terrorist organisation.
