Committee to Protect
Journalists Condemns Arrest of Hawlati Journalist
(Hawlati)
The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists
has published a statement on its website condemning
the arrest of Hawlati journalist Hawez Hawezi.
Hawezi was arrested (on defamation charges) by
Sulaimaniyah security forces because of an opinion
he had published in the paper (criticising local
authorities.)
He was detained for three days then released on
bail. The statement said, "Rather than pursue a
journalist for doing his job the Kurdish authorities
would do well to investigate those who assaulted our
colleague Hawez Hawezi. Such arbitrary and
heavy-handed treatment of the press by Kurdish
authorities shows that their reputation for
tolerance of free media is undeserved.”
(Hawlati is issued
daily by Ranj print house.)
Iranian-American Negotiations on Iraq Suspended

(Al-Sabah)
Vice-president Adil Abdul-Mahdi called for all
involved parties to help investigate the (killings)
at al-Mustafa mosque so that the motives behind the
attack could be made public and those who carried
out the attack could be punished.
He called on all political leaders, the Iraqi
government and the multinational forces to cooperate
to stop this tragedy of bloodshed. Abdul-Mahdi
called for blocking those who fish in still water in
their attempts to stop the political and democratic
process.
He urged all local and international parties to
revise their announcements which should not pouring
oil on the fire. He insisted that the constitution
must be implemented to end the chaos and to find
quick and proper solutions to Iraq's problems. (The
US and Iraqi military reported that they killed 16
insurgents in a joint US-Iraqi raid led by Iraqi
special forces on Sunday. Shia leaders said the
forces attacked a Shia mosque and killed unarmed
worshippers.)
(Al-Sabah is a daily
independent publicly owned newspaper.)
Sistani Urges Forming the Government
(Al-Mashriq)
United Iraqi Alliance list Kasim Dawood, a member of
parliament, said Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani has
urged the formation of the new government in order
to stop violence in Iraq. Meanwhile, Najaf was under
tight security for visitors commemorating the
Prophet Mohammed's death (peace be upon him.) Najaf
police chief said police and emergency forces are
helping to protect Najaf.
(Al-Mashriq is
