A memorial of Halabja at the University of Hull on Sunday, March 18-  14.3.2006

DANCERS ARE BOLLY GOOD

14 March 2006
A new dance company packed with eastern promise is bringing the magic of Bollywood to Hull.

The Hollywood Bollywood Company has been rapidly establishing itself in the city during the past 12 months, running lively Bollywood-style dance classes in schools and community centres across the city.

But this Sunday, members of the public will be able to see the group performing live for an altogether more sombre cause - in a tribute to the 5,000 people who died in the Kurdish city of Halabja on March 19, 1988, after a devastating chemical attack by Saddam Hussein's regime.

The memorial will take place at the University of Hull's Middleton Hall, Cottingham Road, Hull, on Sunday - the 18th anniversary of the attack - and tickets are free.

Company founder Amit Tripathi, 24, from Delhi, said he thought it was important his dance troupe appeared at the memorial.

"We are performing for free because it's such a good cause," he said. "It's important we don't forget about events like Halabja."

Hollywood Bollywood runs classes open to all-comers at Thorpe Resource Centre, in Orchard Park, every Friday, and at Kingston Youth Centre, every Saturday.

Amit came to England from Delhi to study computer programming, but later decided to follow his dream of dancing for a living. He performs alongside Daina Gregory and her daughter Katherine, Supriya Kalia and Sukant Dole.

The group says its aim is to bring the best of eastern and western culture together by fusing the Bollywood dancing style and western pop music into one exciting mix. They say the classes are already helping to bring different communities together.

Supriya, 26, who hails originally from Bombay - "the home of Bollywood" - said the company was also hoping to take their dancing mission beyond Hull to the rest of the country. It is looking for new Bollywood dance teachers to meet the demand for its classes.

Supriya said: "We are doing really well in Hull and the classes are proving very popular in schools and out in the community.

"Bollywood dancing is good fun and very energetic, so it helps you keep fit.

"Eventually we want to expand to other cities across Yorkshire and then nationally. We want to make Hollywood Bollywood an international brand - we're aiming for the stars."
