SULAIMANIYAH, Kurdistan- Iraq, March 17, 2006 -
10h02 - Iraqi Kurdistani police have arrested a
militant from Islamist group Ansar al-Sunna seeking
to blow himself up during commemorations of the 1988
gassing of Kurds in Halabjah, a Kurdish official
said Friday.
The unnamed Kurd was arrested Thursday on the
Iran-Iraq border and confessed to planning to blow
himself up during ceremonies marking the 18th
anniversary of the chemical attack that killed
5,000, said Shahu Mohammed.
Ansar al-Sunna, which has links to the extremist
Al-Qaeda organization, wants to establish an Islamic
fundamentalist state in Iraq and has claimed a
string of attacks and kidnappings in the Kurdish
area (Kurdistan).
Thursday's anniversary in Halabjah saw thousands of
students protesting against local government
corruption. One person died when security guards
opened fire on the demonstration.
