Iraqi Embassy in Berlin does not recognize Kurdistan
Regional Government (northern Iraq)
official documents.
In a letter to one of the Kurdish clients, the Iraqi
Embassy in Berlin termed the Kurdistan Regional
Government as, “unofficial authorities of Northern
Iraq [Shimal ul-Iraq]” .
The Kurdish client applied for an Iraqi passport,
providing Iraqi identifications issued by the
Kurdistan Regional Government. The Iraqi Arab
ambassador to Berlin, Abdul-Salam Muhammed Tahir,
stated:
“The documents that you have provided are issued by
unofficial authorities of Northern Iraq and cannot
be relied upon in issuing a passport.”
The Iraqi constitution recognises the Kurdistan
Regional Government as one of the two federal parts
of Iraq. However, this has not been translated into
aspects of the country. For example, Kurdish is not
used in the Iraqi Parliament or in any official work
of the Iraqi government. The Iraqi passport and
currencies have no Kurdish language on them.
The Iraqi Foreign Minister, Hoshyar Zebari, is a
Kurd and a high ranking member of the KDP, led by
Massued Barzani. The Iraqi President Jalal Talabani
is also a Kurd. Both represent the Kurdistan
Regional Government in the “Federal” Iraqi Republic.
