Violence in Halabja
Published: March 23, 2006:
To the Editor:
Re your March 17 front-page article about the
destruction of the Halabja memorial:
The vandalism in Halabja was not an act by Kurds
seeking better services. The violence and vandalism
at the Halabja memorial were the work of a local
opposition group that has criticized the museum's
depiction of the victims' deaths in the 1988
chemical weapons attack.
These hooligans also destroyed the list of the
victims' names. If the violence had been a genuine
protest against inadequate services provided by the
Kurdistan regional government, government buildings
could have been targeted. There is not a scratch on
these buildings. |

Interestingly, the first item destroyed by the
instigators was a sign forbidding the entry of
Baathists to the memorial. No decent person would do
such a thing. That is why there has been widespread
condemnation of the violence against the memorial.
