Swedish Left Party calls for
Halabja anniversary to become international day
against weapons of mass destruction
Stockholm, 20 March 2006 (KRG). The Swedish
Left Party and its head Mr. Lars Ohly called for the
16th March to be declared an international day
against weapons of mass destruction. The 16th March
is the 18th anniversary of the chemical attacks on
the city of Halabja in the Kurdistan Region.
Representatives of different Swedish political
parties said that Western countries should help to
rebuild and rehabilitate Halabja, where 5,000
civilians were killed and today many are still
seriously ill from the effects of the weapons.
The KRG, as well as several Kurdish organisations,
have for many years asked that the 16th March become
an international day against weapons of mass
destruction and for assistance to be given to the
victims.
