Yankton, SD Engineer going back to Kurdistan-Iraq 15.3.2006

As violence continues to plague Iraq, many military men and women are now on their second tour of duty.

But, there's a Siouxland man who's headed for a third tour... and he's not even in the military. Gary York works at Yankton, South Dakota's Gavins Point Dam.

But, over the last few years, this civil engineer has helped restore electricity to parts of the war-torn country.

But, on Christmas Eve, 2004, he took a bullet in the head... the target of insurgents. While lucky to be alive, he decided during his recovery he needed to go back. "After the first time I felt cheated out of an opportunity to finish what I started," York said.

This week he'll go back to Iraq. But, this time, he'll be stationed away from the violence in the northern Iraqi province of Kurdistan. "Four bombings happens every day in Baghdad, to say that there were four bombings in the Kurdistan region in a year, it says a lot about the security of that region," York said.

Gary York oversees $300-million in contracts as the resident engineer in Kurdistan (northern Iraq).

As Resident Engineer, in Kurdistan, York oversees $300-million in contracts.

They're building hospitals, police stations, and schools. The work he and others like him are doing, may go unnoticed here in the United States, but it is making a difference. "I'd love to take people out back with me and say here we built this substation, we finished this transmission line, we've constructed this police station," York said. "Some of that's really great stuff, it's really great stuff."

Positive changes affecting him and others half-a-world away.

York will finish up in September, and he's not ruling out a fourth trip to Iraq next year.
