ERBIL, Kurdistan
March 13 (KUNA) -- An Iraqi economic expert called
for holding the conferences and training courses in
Iraq instead of abroad to help boost the national
economy.
Iraqi economist, Omar Ameidi told KUNA Monday that
the second conference for Iraq's reconstruction will
be held next June in the Jordanian capital amid
claims of instability and insecurity in Iraq,
although there are several stable areas in Iraq,
such as Kurdistan and other southern areas.
He added that holding such functions in other
countries indirectly deteriorates the Iraqi economy
and destroy the infrastructure.
He indicated this resulted in dropping the national
and individual income while the cost of living is
rising and the economy of the neighboring countries
is booming.
According to the economist, the preliminary
statistics reveal that the inflation increased to 35
percent in 2005 compared to 20 percent in 2004,
which is a 15 percent hike.
Ameidi stressed that the upcoming Iraqi government
should take this issue into consideration through a
national vision and to instead hold such activities
in Iraq.
He expressed hope that all the important functions
will be held in Baghdad in the near future.
He revealed that the state's budget for the past
three years indicated that millions of dollars have
been spent annually on trips, missions and training
courses abroad.
He called for holding such activities in Kurdistan
which enjoys security and stability and has the
required facilities, which would boost the Iraqi
economy in general and the economy of Kurdistan in
particular, and this step would also activate the
airports of Sulaimaniyah and Erbil.
Ameidi noted that such functions would also activate
the services in Kurdistan, especially the hotels and
restaurants which would encourage the Iraqi
investors to invest in Kurdistan and return the
investments to Iraq.
Such a step, he added, would also help reduce
unemployment and increase the possibilities of
establishing tourism projects in Kurdistan.
