Iraqi government needs
the balance of power
Editor:
Through its majority, the Shiite government in Iraq
is taking advantage of democracy to run a government
controlled by its clerics. This is the main reason
the Sunnis and now the Kurds are so angry with the
Shiites and their presidential nominee.
Since there is no Senate to give equal
representation to the Shiite, Sunni and Kurd
peoples, the Shiite majority in the parliament
unfairly dominates all politics in Iraq. It is no
wonder the Sunnis and the Kurds are disillusioned
with democracy. Democracy based on the tyranny of a
majority is no democracy.
There are only two solutions for a unified Iraq. One
is a republic that has a balance of power, like the
Congress, in which a Senate gives equal
representation to all ethnic factions in the
selection of a president, followed by confirmation
in an Iraqi House of Representatives of the
majority. Such a Senate might include a total of 36
representatives-12 Shiites, 12 Sunnis and 12 Kurds.
In addition, judicial nominees should be made by the
president and require a four-fifths approval by the
Senate.
If such a government is not implemented, then Iraq
will likely spiral into endless violence until a
dictator arises as before.
