Ankara, - Two new
border checkpoints will be opened between Iraq and
Turkey, Turkish newspaper Hurriyet reads today.
This issue was discussed yesterday during visit of
Ibrahim Jaafari to Ankara, which ended yesterday.
The two parties have planned to make preliminary
research for defining the places of the checkpoints.
It is expected one of them to be opened at the
border of the territory, which is under management
of Kurdistan Democratic Party and the other one to
be on the Iraqi-Turkish border in an area populated
mainly by Turkmen, the newspaper reads.
During his visit to Ankara, Iraqi Prime Minister
Ibrahim Jaferi touched on the question of trade
between Iraq and Turkey, underlining the fact that
the existing Habur border crossing between the two
countries is insufficient for the level of trade
that exists and might exist in the future. Jaferi
made a call for a second border crossing, promising
that Iraq would work out feasability studies for
such a venture.
Visit "great success"
Finishing up his Ankara talks and returning to Iraq
yesterday, Prime Minister Jaferi made promises that
the new Iraq Constitution would be implemented with
great care, and that Kirkuk would be a focus also of
his efforts in the new Iraqi set-up. Noting that his
visit had been a great success, Jaferi said on
departure "We expect the process of setting up the
new government to be completed soon. The government
will have a wide foundation, and will include all
sectors of Iraqi citizens."
