The New Anatolian
happily reported that Istanbul received the biggest
share in investment incentives in 2005. A
significant part (21.3 pct) of the investments which
received incentive certificates from the Treasury in
2005 was made in İstanbul. The share which was taken
by 13 provinces in Turkey from the private sector
investments in 2005 was under 0.01 pct.
While İstanbul received the highest share with 21.3
percent from the incentive-investments in 2005, 55.3
percent of the investments in Turkey were made in
the top five provinces. The share which was taken by
13 provinces in Turkey from the private sector
investments in 2005 was under 0.01 percent.
Something that can be concluded is that cities with
a Kurdish majority aren’t in the list of the highest
investments and are among the lowest investments,
like the Kurdish province of Hekkari and Merdin.
Many Kurds complain that the government has not done
enough to relieve their chronic poverty. But Erdogan
last year made it clear that Ankara planned no
industrial investments in the region, calling on
local businessmen to take the initiative under a
recently introduced scheme of incentives. |

Diyarbakir Mayor Osman Baydemir, a leading Kurdish
politician, welcomed Erdogan’s promise for a
democratic settlement of the Kurdish question.

America together with six businessmen. He will go to
Nashville, Tennessee, Washington D.C. and New York.
This visit is planned to develop a sister-city
project between Amed [Diyarbakir] and Nashville.
Earlier the mayor complained that there weren’t
enough investments in Diyarbakir and that finance
money from the EU flows to the Turkish top
provinces.
