Barzani and
Participation in the New Government
(Al-Sabah)
Kurdistan region president Massoud Barzani
maintained that all political blocs must reach an
accord so they can begin implementing the new
government's agenda. He added that the Kurdistan
Alliance's participation in the new government will
depend on the government's agenda and on
constitutional bases. He affirmed that all of the
political lists that won (parliamentary seats) in
the elections should participate in the government
and that not one should be excluded. He denied that
the Kurds might ally with other blocs against the
United Iraqi Alliance. He hoped for a democratic and
federal Iraq under which both Kurds and Arabs live
peacefully after their long struggle for freedom and
democracy.

Eliminating Administrative and Financial
Corruption
(Al-Mashriq)
Deputy head of the integrity commission, Moosa
Faraj, said the commission must be free of political
and official pressure in order to eliminate
corruption and to respond to judicial board
decisions without considering the sectarian, ethnic,
religious and political backgrounds of corrupt
individuals. He noted that Kurdistan region
president Massoud Barzani had insisted that
corruption be eliminated in all government offices
and that the Kurdistan region would no longer be a
safe haven for corrupt individuals.

Terrorism Continues
(Al-Bayan)
A car bomb exploded on February 16 near the
University of Technology, killing two Iraqis and
wounding five. The explosion that targeted a police
patrol caused severe damage to shops near the
university and burned many cars parked there. There
were no reports of police casualties. Meanwhile,
three children were killed by a roadside bomb while
on their way to school.

issued four times weekly by the Islamic Dawa Party,
chaired by Iraqi prime minister Ibrahim al-Ja'afari.)
Amarah Quarantined
(Al-Mada)
Health minister Abdul Mutalib Salih announced that
an individual has died of the H5N1 strain of bird
flu in Amarah, Maysan province. He said that Amarah
must be 100 per cent quarantined and that medicine
must be provided to prevent the disease from
spreading. He asked security agencies to stop people
from selling birds (in Amarah) and asked them to
burn all poultry. Salih urged clerics to educate
people about the dangers of having birds inside
their houses and requested that medical experts form
a special unit to confront the disease. Five
children are suffering from bird flu symptoms at the
communicable disease hospital.
