Opinion: Kurdish
Universities and Bird Flu
(By Rahman
Gareeb, Hawlati, February 8, 2006)
Now, throughout the region, villagers and the urban public have launched a
campaign to cull birds, and they are very much
afraid of them. The fear of H5N1 has infiltrated our
lives, especially when we hear the media talk daily
about finding new cases. But in this regard the only
surprising spectators are the ministry of higher
education and universities. So far, the universities
and the higher education ministry are shocked. They
haven't conducted any research, seminars or
scientific conferences to discuss the situation. We
do not criticize them because we expect miracles
such us the discovery of a drug to confront the
disease. But they are expected to have an active
role in making people aware. If all the universities
in Kurdistan cannot hold a scientific conference,
they can have representatives in committees that
have been formed to terminate the disease. Or they
can launch campaign to educate people how to protect
themselves, and join the ministries of health and
agriculture to put an end to this threatening
situation. Progressive international universities
compete with each other to find treatments not only
for diseases that face their community, but also for
those that other communities must face. But it seems
that in our country the duty of universities is to
graduate students and distribute certificates,
without serving or offering anything to society. The
time has come for the universities and the ministry
of higher education to at least help people
recognise the disease and teach them how to protect
themselves, if they cannot make a scientific
discovery.

Opinion: Electricity
and Our Suffering
(By Majeed al-Lami,
Al-Taakhi, February 7, 2006)
It is much ado about nothing to talk about
electricity in Iraq. We have heard many declarations
that simplified the issue and promises that
officials would repair it. Yet, things continued as
is. The people who suffered from continuous power
cuts have not noticed any improvements. We hope that
the new government will work to sweep out corrupt
(individuals) from the electricity sector who have
become rich at the expense of the suffering people.
We are unwilling listen to any more false
declarations about repairing electricity. All that
we would like to hear are the main reasons behind
the deterioration of electricity that has led us to
this tragic situation. Electricity is a blessing
that Iraqis have been deprived from. We are tired of
using kerosene lamps. Let all of the concerned
bodies know that our suffering from (the lack of)
electricity is bigger than their interests in
stuffing their pockets and achieving political
goals.

issued daily by the Kurdistan Democratic Party.)
Opinion: The
Detainees
(By Saleem
Rasool, Al-Bayan, February 7, 2006)
The terror issue is the biggest that the government
is facing, and the authorities have arrested many
terrorists and achieved progress in this regard.
Security forces have conducted raids that helped
reduce terrorist acts. The public and political
parties should thank the government for this because
terrorism excludes no one. Innocent people who have
nothing to do with terrorism may be mistakenly or
unintentionally arrested. The government should free
them and punish those members of the security forces
who abused innocent Iraqis. Just as security forces
work to protect people from terror, they should work
to protect innocent people as well. Some political
parties asked the government to free all of the
detainees. But this is not logical because it would
revive terrorism, and terrorists would feel that
there is someone defending them. It sounds logical
if they asked to free those who were arrested by
mistake. Parties connecting themselves to terrorism
are making a big mistake and are (playing) two sides
of the same coin. They must revise their position
before it is too late for them, and the people
reject them.
(Al-Bayan is
issued four times weekly by the Islamic Dawa Party,
chaired by Iraqi prime minister Ibrahim al-Ja'afari.)
