A
Kurdish local government official was killed by a
South Korean military truck in a traffic accident in
Kurdistan (northern Iraq) city of Erbil on
Wednesday, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said
Thursday.
The accident happened around 12:35 p.m. on the
outskirts of Kurdish-controlled Erbil when a Korean
soldier, trying to avoid a car cutting in front of
him, hit an Iraqi on the street, a JCS spokesman
said. The soldier was on his way back to his unit
after a humanitarian mission,
The victim, a 53-year-old local government official,
was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital, he said.
"The traffic accident occurred in the line of duty,
so we are seeking ways to compensate the victim’s
family," the spokesman, Col. Ha Du-cheol, told
reporters, adding that South Korean and local
investigators are still examining the case.
The Korean corporal driver, identified only by his
surname Song, is subject to the country’s law, he
said.
South Korea maintains a 3,250-strong Zaytun Unit in
Erbil on a humanitarian and reconstruction mission
in the war-torn Middle East nation. The number of
troops will be reduced to about 1,000 under a troop
deployment bill passed by the National Assembly last
December.
