Baghdad, 14 Feb. (AKI) - Thousands of people in
Kurdistani (northern Iraq) city of Erbil staged a
peaceful protest Tuesday against the Danish cartoons
depicting the Prophet Mohammed.
Local media reports say the crowd numbered as
many as ten thousand and marched towards the
parliament of the autonomous Kurdish region. Led by
leaders of local Islamic movements and by the
committee of the Kurdish ulema, the protest leaders
have asked the parliament to take an official stance
on the cartoon row.
In particular the demonstrators want the Kurdish
autonomous region to officially adhere to the global
protest campaign against the cartoons and are in
favour of punishing its authors.
“I like this day because the words ‘I love you’ were
said to me on it,” said Hana, a Kurdish young woman
of 24.
