Heavy rain wreaks havoc in Erbil-Kurdistan

Erbil, Kurdistan-Iraq, Feb 5, - Heavy rainfall
over the past two days have caused massive damage in
the Kurdistani town of Erbil, resulting in the death
of one person, and collapse of three bridges and
hundreds of homes, while mid-term university exams
were postponed.
A Kurd 'Abdul Ghani Hasan' was killed when his
pickup car was swept by heavy flooding into the
Great Zab river after a bridge in Afrar Barzati area
collapsed, Brigadier Ferhad Seleim, General Director
of Erbil police told VOI on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Nozad Hadi, Governor of Erbil said that
three bridges on the outskirts of Erbil collapsed
after heavy rains.
"The number of houses that collapsed or were flooded
is estimated at 700 houses,"
Kurdistan government has on Saturday decided to form
a special committee to estimate the damages in Erbil
in order to compensate the affected citizens.
According to Erbil weather forecast authority, about
103 mm of rainwater fell on the city during the last
two days, a rare event not witnessed for many years.
Mid-term exams in five colleges of Saladin
University in Erbil were postponed due to continuous
rainfall.
"Examinations halls are overcrowded especially
because most of the college’s buildings are small
and have no proper halls for the exams,” the source,
who declined to be named, said.
