SULAIMANIYAH, Kurdistan-Iraq, Feb 6, - Tens of
Iraqi Kurds demonstrated in Kurdistani town of
Sulaimaniyah on Monday to protest offending cartoons
depicting the Prophet Mohammed in western media and
a controversial Kurdish book on women status in
Islam.
A Kurdish minister announced that an arrest warrant
was issued against the author.
The demonstrators, estimated at some 300 Iraqi Kurds
from 1 million residence of Sulaimaniyah city,
shouted religious slogans, while about 40 women
followed at the rear shouting the same slogans.
The satirical drawings, published first in the
Danish Jyllands-Posten newspaper then republished in
other western papers, have caused widespread anger
among Muslims around the world.
Several Iraqi towns have seen angry demonstrations
and protests against the provocative caricatures.
Meanwhile, the demonstrators were also protesting
against a Kurdish-language book titled “Sex,
Legislation and Woman in the History of Islam” by
Kurdish author Meriwan Halabji which is a historical
study of women status in Islam.
Kurdish Minister of Endowment in Sulaimaniyah
Mohammed Kazni told the protestors who headed for
the cabinet headquarters that an arrest warrant was
issued against Halabji.
“We will imprison him and sentence him with the
severest punishment,” the minister said.
As for the insulting cartoons, he said that the
provincial government could not make complaints or
take an official position on this issue.
The minister demanded Baghdad government to adopt
such a position.
