Germany charges Iraqi Kurd with aiding Ansar al-Islam Terror Group 7.2.2006

BERLIN, Germany, (Feb 7), - Germany's federal prosecutor charged an Iraqi national with supporting the terrorist group Ansar al-Islam by raising funds for the group.

The man, identified as Ferhad Kanabi A., alias Kawa H., has been in custody since June 14, the prosecutor said in a statement faxed to news organizations today. He is alleged to have collected money for Ansar al-Islam and transferred it to Iraq on seven occasions since March 2004, the statement said.

The 34-year-old suspect also was accused of aiding Ata R., another alleged member of Ansar al-Islam, who is charged with attempting to assassinate former Iraqi Prime Minister Ayad Allawi on a visit to Berlin in December 2004, the prosecutor said.

He was accused of helping Ata R. transfer money to Iraq to help finance attacks and give logistical support to Ansar al-Islam, and was also charged with breaching export control rules.

Ansar al-Islam was founded in Kurdistan (northern Iraq) in September 2001 with the aim of building an Islamic state modeled on the former Islamic Taliban militia that ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001, the prosecution has said. The group, which renamed itself Jais Ansar al-Sunna after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, claimed responsibility for several attacks, including bombings, shootings and kidnappings.

The Munich Higher Regional Court on Jan. 12 sentenced Lokman Mohammed, a Kurd who has lived in Germany since 2000, to seven years in prison for being a member of Ansar al-Islam.

Germany's federal prosecutor on Dec. 21 charged another Iraqi national, identified only as Dieman A. I., with providing financial aid and logistical support to Ansar al-Islam, the prosecutor's office said Jan. 9. The federal prosecutor on Nov. 10 charged Ata R. and two other Iraqi nationals, identified as Mazen H. and Rafik Y., in the 2004 plot to assassinate Alawi.
