Press Release
Brussels, 27 Feb (KRG) – The KRG
Representation to the EU, Belgium and the
Netherlands hosted two days of cultural activities
in Brussels.
Diplomats, EU officials and the Kurdish community
were invited to the Belgian avant premiere of
Kilometre Zero, director Hiner Saleem’s latest film.
They also enjoyed a concert of traditional music by
renowned Kurdish artists Tara Jaff and Adnan Karim.
Mr Burhan Jaff, Head of the KRG Representation, said
“The KRG is proud that Kurds are excelling in arts
that are relatively new to us, such as the cinema.
Hiner Saleem is one of a group of Kurdish directors
who are making a name for themselves not only in
Kurdistan but also internationally. The government’s
policy is to nurture and promote our artists.”
The concert by singers Tara Jaff and Adnan Karim was
held in the Bibliotheque Solvay hall.
Tara Jaff played the Celtic harp and Adnan Karim
played the oude. Ms Catherine O’Conner, an assistant
in the European Parliament, said “I arrived at the
concert feeling very tense after a hard day’s work.

But after the concert I felt uplifted and relaxed.
Both musicians had beautiful voices, and I thought
the Celtic harp worked perfectly with the Kurdish
melodies.”
Director Hiner Saleem has made four films, two of
which have won awards at international film
festivals. Mr Saleem said, “I am grateful for the
support I have received from the KRG in making my
films. The KRG has provided not only financial
assistance but also practical help, for example by
letting me use the Kurdish military as extras.”
