Launch of new Austrian Airlines service to Erbil,
Kurdistan (Iraq) postponed
Austrian Airlines will delay its new services from
Vienna to Erbil. Flights to the Kurdistan region
were scheduled to start March 12. Austrian would
have been the first European carrier to offer direct
flights to Iraq (ATWOnline, Jan. 10) and said it has
not given up on launching the route at a later date.
The launch by the Austrian Airlines Group of a new
direct service to the city of Erbil in the Region of
Kurdistan / Iraq, which was originally planned to
take place on 12 March 2006, has had to be delayed
due to recent flight-operational concerns. Following
a re-evaluation of the general situation by Austrian
Flight Operations, the Austrian Airlines Group has
now decided to postpone the launch of the new
service.
Although the evaluation and the preparation for the
new destination Erbil have been positive so far and
the launch has been planned for mid-March, several
evaluation phases have been foreseen specifically
for this destination.
The launch of the new service is to be put on hold
until an as yet unspecified date.
Austrian´s interest in integrating Erbil into its
scheduled programme as soon as possible remains as
strong as before. As soon as the re-evaluation will
be positive, it will be possible to launch the new
service. The Austrian Airlines Group continues to
prepare intensely for the later launch.
