(PUK) weekly newspaper Chawder on 27 February
Four patients suspected of having bird flu were
admitted to a special ward for bird flu at
Sulaimaniyah Teaching Hospital on Saturday, 25
February 2006.
In this context, the head of the department for
controlling contagious diseases in the department
for health and protecting the environment in
Sulaimaniyah, Dr Farhad Majid Ali, told Chawder that
three of these cases, a mother and two daughters,
were from one household which owns poultry, in Taza-de
village in Kalar area. The fourth case is a 30-
year-old woman from Chamchamal.
Dr Ali explained that these four patients were
suspected of having bird flu, and for that reason
they had been placed under strict medical
observation. He added that the patients were given
anti-bird-flu drugs and nobody was allowed to enter
their ward, apart from the medical staff. He added
that after the patients were discharged from the
hospital all their belongings would be destroyed in
order to prevent the spread of the disease.
He said that before these four cases, another three
[as published] were admitted to hospital on 22
February, but later they discharged themselves.
He added: "There have been 35 cases so far in the
area under the control of the PUK-led Kurdistan
regional government. Two of these cases were
positive and they died as a result.
