Isa Chalky, who fled Kurdistan in 1988 and settled
in Nashville, called the commission's suggestion to
withdraw most U.S. troops by early 2008 "a very bad
idea."
"The region is already in so much turmoil, and if
the U.S. backs out now, it'll be total disaster,"
said Chalky, part of a Kurdish community in Middle
Tennessee that numbers about 9,000.
"As Kurds, we are worried about a pullout and the
signal it will send to neighboring countries over
there. It'll be a free-for-all civil war. It'll be
very separated. For example, if you're a Shiite, you
won't be able to go into Sunni areas, and if you're
Sunni, you won't be able to go into Shiite areas."
Chalky watched the Saddam Hussein trial and felt
relief when the guilty verdict was read. The verdict
was announced 15 years to the day after Chalky's
family settled in Nashville after fleeing Saddam's
army.
"The people are mostly very grateful for what the
U.S. and its allies have sacrificed," he said. "But
at this moment, I just don't think it's the best
thing to do, to cut and run. It'll be a total
disaster."
