Giant garage being built in Sharazor-Sulaimaniyah
Sulaimaniyah: The Kurdistan Investment Corporation
will oversee construction of the Sharazor terminal
project in Sulaimaniyah.
It is scheduled for completion in 36 months, at a
cost of over $9 million, local media reported last
week. Al-Sard Company and Farhad Zanmy, both from
western Iraq, will carry out the project.
Upon visiting the project site, Sulaimaniyah
municipality president Hakim Qadir said that the
terminal will have a modern design and will be
equipped with state-of- the-art necessities. The Sulaimaniyah
municipality provided nine hectares of land for the
new terminal. Qadir added that the new garage should
accommodate all the vehicles that owned lines in the
old garage.
Studies reveal rise in cancer rates
Recent studies have shown that during the past 11
months, 437 patients have been diagnosed with cancer
in Erbil.
Recent studies from both Rizgary Teaching Hospital
and Nanakali Hospital in Erbil have shown that
during the past 11 months, 437 patients have been
diagnosed with cancer in Erbil.
A source from the chemotherapy department at Rizgary
told local media that so far, in 2006, 180 cases of
cancer have been identified in the hospital; 7 of
them were children and the rest were adults.
Fortunately, most of them are under a physician's
care and are receiving cancer treatment. These
patients have been affected by 27 different kinds of
cancers. Compared to last year, the incidence rate
of cancer in general has risen by 2%. The
chemotherapy department of the hospital possesses 24
different types of chemotherapeutic medications.
In addition, according to studies at Nanakali, 257
patients developed blood cancers in 2006, 163 of
them were children and 94 were adults. A source from
Nanakali told local media that blood cancer diseases
in Erbil have risen by 5% this year.
Regarding causes of blood cancers, Sami Ahmed,
director of Nanakali, stated, "So far, the exact
reason causing these diseases are not well
understood, but environmental factors such as
radiation from atomic bombs and exposure to some
chemicals such as benzene might have an impact on
increasing cancer rates among the population."
Kuwaiti companies search for investment
opportunities in Kurdistan
A delegation of Kuwaiti companies visited Kurdistan
in search of investment and construction
opportunities for a number of big projects, local
media reported.
A delegate representative of General Stores told the
media that opportunities to invest in the Kurdistan
Region are excellent. "We have prepared ourselves
for two projects: One of them is the construction of
a unit in Erbil, comprising a four-star hotel, a big
trade centre, a cinema, and settlement units. The
second one, which is only in the studying phase, is
construction of a free trade zone," the director of
Land's National Company, a member of the delegation,
said.
Lately, a large number of companies from various
countries have made Kurdistan Region one of their
primary destinations for investment, due mainly to
stable security conditions.
Building camp for refugees
A huge camp being north of Mosul will shelter up to
2000 Kurdish families.
The head of relations at the governorate of Duhok
announced that a huge camp being built north of
Mosul will shelter up to 2,000 Kurdish families
fleeing the dangerous security situation in other
parts of Iraq.
"The governorate of Duhok has embarked on
preparations with the United Nations Higher
Commission for Refugees to set up a huge refugee
camp in the Shalalat area, 12km northeast of Mosul,
to accommodate families escaping danger in Mosul,
Baghdad, and other parts of Iraq," Hamid Ahmed
Salih, from the governorate of Duhok, told Voices of
Iraq News Agency.
"The camp should initially be able to shelter up to
1,000 families, and its capacity is expected to be
increased enough to accommodate 4,000 families in
the future. All facilities will be provided by the
governorate of Duhok," Salih added.
Regarding the location of the camp, so close to
Mosul, Salih said the purpose was to keep families
close to their places of origin and enable them to
maintain their jobs and businesses.
