Nawshirwan Mustafa the initiator of a
reformist wave inside PUK has
resigned from his post.
The new wave started by Nawshirwan to reform PUK,
and get rid of the old, dysfunctional and corrupt
elements inside PUK. The movement was long awaited
by the people, taking before in consideration the
sensitive situation of Kurds in Iraq and of PUK in
relation with KDP.
The elections did not start without the expected
acts of bribery; intimidation and even shootings
against new members who represent the reform wave
inside PUK, and whom has a clean record and do not
belong to the old corrupt veterans.
There are three groups inside PUK: the reformists
under the leadership of Nawshirwan and the group of
the old corrupt veterans under the protection and
umbrella of president Jalal Talabani.
The third group is of the vice president of
Kurdistan region Kosrat Resul. Kosrat Resul group
supported and allied itself in the beginning with
the reformist wave but later changed coarse and
promised loyalty to Talabani’s group.
The situation was so alarming for the clique of the
president that the president left all his national
worries in Baghdad and went to Suleimani to save
what can be saved of his old committed group in the
party. The group of Talabani used all kinds of ways
to be able to win the elections from bribery,
intimidation to even kidnappings and shootings.
Nawshirwan was the second man inside PUK, he is one
of the founders and driving forces behind PUK’s
strong march as second power parallel to KDP.
Nawashirwan is a man known for his low profile in
Kurdish politics and working behind the scenes.
Besides he has a clean record in corruption,
nepotism and other malpractices, which is a rarity
among Kurdish politicians.
He started his career in mountains and was a
peshmerga, known for his firmness and uncompromising
stances.
Nawshirwan was not regarded as a fine politician to
work with in Kurdistan because of his firmness and
uncompromising stance regarding vital issues. And
this was obvious as one of the very few politicians
who threatened against measures of Paul Bremer the
civil administrator of coalition forces. Besides he
does not apply the old negative tribal Kurdish way
of doing politics.
Nawshirwan is also extremely popular among the youth
in Kurdistan.
A serious plot of PUK’s notorious and corrupt
officials against Nawshirwan’s reformist wave has
demolished the last hope of a serious reform in
Kurdish politics and society. This will lead to an
escalating dissatisfaction among the people of
Kurdistan.
