SEOUL, December 4, -- South Korea sent a
fact-finding delegation of about 20 officials to
Iraq on Saturday with the aim of checking out local
conditions and determining the feasibility of South
Korean companies tapping the Iraqi market, the
Ministry of Construction and Transportation said
Monday.
Scheduled to stay in the northern Kurdistan region
of Erbil until Wednesday, the delegation plans to
verify the security conditions and lay some
preliminary groundwork for South Korean companies'
inroads into the region, as well as inspecting
promising business fields, the ministry said.
About 2,300 South Korean soldiers, mostly
non-combatants, have been staying in the city since
August 2004, mainly engaged in humanitarian and
rebuilding activities.
South Korean companies have avoided the Iraqi market
since a South Korean hostage was beheaded there in
June 2004.
The government will decide whether to permit
companies to re-enter the Iraqi market following the
delegation's return, the ministry added.
