Iran: December 7, Student Day, Protests for Kurdish Students Rights 6.12.2006

December 6, 2006

In the run up to Student Day on December 7, in fear of increasing students’ demonstrations and protests, the inhuman mullahs’ regime has intensified suppressive measures.

The regime’s suppressive forces have barred some students from enrolling in graduate schools despite their academic eligibility. The process of so called “marking” dissident students has been stepped up; it is a way to stop them from continuing their higher education.

Separately, after Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s trip to northwestern province of Kurdistan, several Kurdish students at Kurdistan University, due to their protests against him were prevented from continuing their education.

The Iranian Resistance calls on all international organizations and bodies that advocate human rights and freedom of speech, and on all student associations and unions throughout the world, to condemn the suppression of students in Iran and support the Iranian students’ protests.

Iranian Kurdistan ( Kurdistana Rojhilat (Eastern Kurdistan) or Rojhilatê Kurdistan (East of Kurdistan)) is an unofficial name for the parts of Iran inhabited by Kurds and has borders with Iraq and Turkey.

It includes the greater parts of West Azerbaijan province, Kurdistan Province, Kermanshah Province, and Ilam Province.

Kurds form the majority of the population of this region with an estimated population of 4 million. The region is the eastern part of the greater cultural-geographical area called Kurdistan.

The Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran is a Kurdish opposition group in Iranian Kurdistan which seeks the attainment of Kurdish national rights within a democratic federal republic of Iran. The current General Secretary of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan is Mustafa Hijri

"Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan" (PDKI) was founded in Mahabad, Iran, on August 16, 1945. PDKI replaced the Komeley Jiyanewey Kurd (Council of Kurdish Resurrection) which had been formed three years earlier.

Just 159 days after its foundation in January 22, 1946, the Party, availing itself of expedient circumstances in a section of Iranian Kurdistan, established the " Republic of Kurdistan ", usually referred to by historians as the Republic of Mahabad , the reason being its choice of Mahabad as the capital.
