Kurdistan Regional Govt minister to meet Australian political and business leaders 4.12.2006

Erbil, Kurdistan Region (Iraq) ,-- Falah Bakir, the Kurdistan Regional Government Director of Foreign Relations, arrived in Canberra on Sunday 3rd December for an official visit during which he will meet with political and business leaders, officials from the Australian government and representatives of the Kurdistani community in Australia.

The aim of the visit is to build greater international support for the Kurdistan Region’s political and economic
development.

“This visit offers a chance to present our ideas and hopes for the future of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region directly to the highest levels of the Australian government,” said Minister Bakir.

“Australia is an important coalition partner and has been playing a key role in supporting the liberation of Iraq.

We are grateful for the sacrifices which they have made for our freedom and I look forward to thanking Australia’s leaders personally.”

During his visit, Minister Bakir will meet with Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer as well as Minister for Education Julie Bishop, Minister for Conservation Eric Abetz, and Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs Gary Hardgrave.

He will also meet with the President of the Senate Paul Calvert, the Australian-Iraqi Parliamentary Friendship Group, and the Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs Kevin Rudd.

Meetings are also scheduled with the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association and other private sector groups.

“I will be discussing the progress we are making in the Kurdistan Region and our security situation, as well as discussing with government and private sector leaders how they can help by investing in our Region," said Minister Bakir.
