London, -- The
British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) on
Thursday amended its travel advice for the Kurdistan
Region (Iraq). It has removed its previous advice
against all but essential travel.
The British government’s press release stated that,
“The Foreign and Commonwealth Office today amended
the travel advice for the Kurdish Regional
Government-controlled provinces of Dohuk, Erbil and
Sulaimaniyah in Kurdistan-Iraq, to remove the advice
against all but essential travel.”
The travel advice now distinguishes the Kurdistan
Region from other parts of Iraq, reflecting its
relative stability, peace and security.
Minister Falah Mustafa Bakir, Director of the KRG
Office of Foreign Relations, said, “We welcome the
FCO’s change to the travel advice. This is yet
another positive step for the Kurdistan Region. This
change will help the business community, academics
and other institutions to travel more easily to the
Kurdistan Region.
Thanks to Austrian Airlines’ recent initiative to
start operating regular scheduled flights, now
travel to our area is much easier. We hope that
other countries will follow and do the same. Our
Region needs and deserves to be treated
separately”.
Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, KRG High Representative to
the UK and Chair of the Kurdistan Development
Corporation, said “In September and November, we
were delighted to welcome two senior British trade
delegations and members of the House of Lords to the
Region. They saw for themselves that Kurdistan is
peaceful and stable.”
Sensible precautions should still be taken when
travelling in the safer Kurdistan Region, according
to the FCO. The Kurdistan Regional Government also
recommends that visitors seek advice before
travelling.
