One to Three years in prison
for using Kurdish software in Turkey
Diyarbakir, November 29, -- The Diyarbakir
Chief Public Prosecutor's Office yesterday launched
an investigation into Sur Mayor Abdullah Demirbas
who commissioned a Kurdish language version of a
widely used computer program.
First launched some time ago and covered by media,
the software is a Kurdish version of the Ubuntu
Linux distribution.
The program's name comes from the Zulu and Xhosa
concept of ubuntu, which means "humanity towards
others." This first Linux-based Kurdish software was
presented in English by American software specialist
Rainer Heider at a ceremony organized by the Sur
Municipality, with Heider's explanations translated
into Kurdish. |

It was stated at the ceremony that all
correspondence could be done in Kurdish.
Delivering a speech at the ceremony, Mayor Demirbas
described multilingualism as a treasure.
Advocating autonomous municipal services in every
language, including Kurdish, Demirbas faced one to
three years in prison for a speech he delivered
earlier in the year in Vienna, Austria.

The use of the term "Kurdistan" is vigorously
rejected due to its alleged political implications
by the Republic of Turkey, which does not recognize
the existence of a "Turkish Kurdistan"
