DIYARBAKIR,
Turkey-Kurdistan, November 24, -- One Turkish
soldier and three militants of the outlawed
Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) have been killed in
clashes in southeast Turkey, the regional governor's
office said on Friday.
The soldier, a commando sergeant, died on Thursday
when rebels opened fire on his unit in a remote
mountainous part of Sirnak province, it said. A PKK
rebel also died in the clash.
The other two guerrillas were killed earlier on
Thursday in the same region, where security forces
have been waging a campaign to flush out the rebels
since last Sunday.
Sirnak province borders northern Iraq, where up to
5,000 PKK fighters are believed to be hiding. Turkey
has repeatedly urged Iraq and U.S. troops based
there to crack down on the PKK. Iraq says it has
closed down PKK offices in the country.
The PKK declared a unilateral ceasefire on Oct. 1,
which was rejected by Turkey.
Turkey's army and government have dismissed the move
as a publicity stunt and say they will continue to
hunt down the rebels. Troops killed at least six
rebels last week.
More than 37,000 people have been killed since 1984
when the PKK took up arms for self-rule in the
country's mainly Kurdish southeast of Turkey.

The use of the term "Kurdistan" is vigorously
rejected due to its alleged political implications
by the Republic of Turkey, which does not recognize
the existence of a "Turkish Kurdistan"
