Turkey: Debts of Flood Kurdish Victims to
be Postponed

18, -- Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan
has announced that taxes and debts of the people who
had been affected in the floods that hit the mainly
Kurdish southeastern part of the country two weeks
ago would be postponed
Erdogan visited the southeastern Turkish cities of
Sanliurfa, Batman and Diyarbakir, which the flooding
struck hardest, on Friday. He was briefed about the
damages and the outcomes of the natural disaster.
Erdogan talked to the victims of the floods and
listened to their demands. Addressing the flood
victims living in a tents, he also pledged that the
government would "heal all wounds" in the region,
arguably the most impoverished part of the country.

Housing will be built for those who lost their
houses in the flood, the premier noted, adding that
the houses will be completed and handed over in
eight months.
The ministers of Housing, Energy and Agriculture
also accompanied Erdogan during his visit.
Erdogan had postponed his visit to the region,
originally planned to be held on Wednesday last
week, due to official state ceremony for former
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, who passed away
earlier this month.

The use of the term "Kurdistan" is vigorously
rejected due to its alleged political implications
by the Republic of Turkey, which does not recognize
the existence of a "Turkish Kurdistan".
Others estimate as many as 40 million Kurds live in
Big Kurdistan (Iraq, Turkey, Syria, Iran, Armenia),
which covers an area as big as France, about half of
all Kurds which estimate to 20 million live in
Turkey.

banned in Iran, Syria, and Turkey where flying it is
a criminal offence"
