ANKARA, Turkey,
November 17 ,-- A court in Istanbul decided
yesterday to stop publication and distribution of a
pro-Kurdish newspaper for 15 days
in an ongoing investigation into certain news
articles and commentaries.
Prosecutors have brought legal action against Ulkede
Ozgur Gundem newspaper as they said members of the
outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the
crimes that the group has committed were openly
praised in 13 articles that have been published in
it.
Statements of PKK leaders and its offshoot Kongra-Gel
have been published in the newspaper, while certain
articles appeared to be pointing to officials
involved in the fight against terrorism, something
that could make them target of possible attacks.
The court said in its decision that the newspaper
abused the freedom of expression and spread
terrorist propaganda.
The PKK is designated as a terrorist group by Turkey
as well as the United States and the European Union.
More than 37,000 people have been killed since 1984
when the PKK took up arms for self-rule in the
country's mainly Kurdish southeast of Turkey.
