Iraq promises crackdown on PKK 18.11.2006

ANKARA, Turkey, November 18 ,-- Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, on a visit to Turkey, said his government plans to crack down on the Kurdistan Workers Party or PKK.

Maliki said his government has ordered that all PKK offices in Iraq be closed, the New Anatolian reported.

"No institution or establishment that will constitute a danger for our neighbors could operate in Iraq," he said.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan offered to help train Iraqi security force.

Turkey is concerned about proposals to split Iraq into three semi-autonomous regions. Officials fear the creation of a Kurdistan in Iraq would be a draw for Turkish Kurds.

The Turkish foreign minister said recently that Kirkuk, the major city in the Kurdish region of Iraq, should be governed under a power-sharing arrangement.

The fight against PKK cannot be tackled with a military option alone, retired Gen. Edip Başer, Turkey's coordinator for countering the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), said on Friday, while cautioning against a military solution to eradicate the PKK problem.

“It's not possible for us to [hit the PKK based in the Kandil Mountains]. Why not? Because political and military conditions are not appropriate for this,” Başer told at a meeting in Ankara. “The fight against terrorism does not only consist of an armed struggle by security forces,” he added.
