The Kurdish American Youth Organization (KAYO), with
the help of the Kurdish communities in North
America, has initiated an effort to provide
assistance to the Kurdish flood victims in Turkey.
Flash floods caused by torrential rain hit the
country this month with the most serious damage to
the cities of Diyarbakir (Amed) and Batman. The
Dicle News Agency has reported that the current
death toll as a result of the flood is at least 40
in the impoverished regions. According to the
Milliyet, this is a result of the “shoddy
construction and creaking infrastructure” in these
regions. Since then, many homes have collapsed and
thousands of people have been dislocated as a
result.
The Diyarbakir Physicians Chamber has also warned
against infectious diseases resulting from the
mixture of waste water into drinking water. The
cities’ mayors have called for help from both
international relief organizations and the Turkish
government, but so far all help has been minimal. |

The use of the term "Kurdistan" is vigorously
rejected due to its alleged political implications
by the Republic of Turkey, which does not recognize
the existence of a "Turkish Kurdistan".
