3000 US$ Marriage Gift in Kurdistan (Hawlati)

The Kurdistan Economic Development Organisation intends to give 3000 US dollars as a "marriage advance" to any young person who wants to get married. The advance will not cover married people.

(Hawlati is and independent newspaper issued weekly in Sulaimaniyah.)

Former Bathists Restored (Kuridstani Nwe)

The De-Bathification High Committee has submitted to parliament a draft law on restoring former Baathists who were sacked after the fall of Saddam. Dr Abdullah Aliawayee, a member of de-bathification committee, said the bill stipulates that most former Ba'athist will get their jobs back or will retire willingly.
The draft does not apply to 1,200 who have been charged.

Government Employees Kidnapped (Asharq al-Awsat)

Minister of higher education Abid Thiyab al-Ujaily said the kidnapping of 150 ministry employees and visitors by an armed group masquerading as police was an attempt to deal higher education a seiorus blow. A big operation by Iraqi and Coaltion forces is under way to find the kidnappers. The abduction is being seen as the biggest infiltration of the Iraqi security apparatus. The police were accused of involvement and five officers have been taken into custody.

Casualties in Coalition Raid (Azzaman)

Six people were killed and another 13 injured, in an American raid on the Al-Shu'la neighborhood of Baghdad An interior ministry source, who wanted to stay anonymous, said, "An American force raided two sectors in al-Shu'la which resulted in clashes. Then American helicopters bombed the area and killed six people." There were demonstrations yesterday in Al-Shu'la where protesters expressed their support for Shia cleric Muqtada al- Sadir. No comments were made by Iraqi and coalition forces on the raid.
