Sulaimaniyah's Rich List
(Kuridstani Nwe)
There are 35 billionaires and one thousand
millionaires in the Sulaimaniyah region.
Abdullah Haji Saeed, an aide to PUK Secretary
General Jalal Takabani, said that between 1998 to
2006, you could rarely find millionaires in Iraqi
Kurdistan.
He said the stable security situation, investment
opportunities and and a growing number of jobs were

Ansar al-Islam Attacks PUK Military
(Awene)
A group of fighters belonging to Ansar al-Islam have
launched two attacks on a base belonging to a
peshmerga brigade of the Patriotic Union of
Kurdistan, PUK. The attacks on the base at Bani
Shari Kon, north of Khurmal in the east of
Sulaimaniyah province, each lasted about 45 minutes
on the night of October 25-26, with both sides
exchanging automatic fire and hand-held rocket
grenades.
No casualties were reported. A source at the PUK
unit told Awene that advance warning was received
two weeks earlier that Ansar al-Islam wanted to
infiltrate the area and attack peshmerga units, so
the latter were already on the alert. Bani Shari Kon
was the home village of Hemin Bani Shari, an Ansar
leader killed in Fallujah in the 2004 battle with
United States troops.

Ocalan Says Ceasefire is Last Chance
(Kuridstani Nwe)
Jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan says the Kurdish
guerrilla force’s announcement of a unilateral
ceasefire is a “last chance” which should be
carefully considered by the Turkish government. In
remarks to his lawyer, Ocalan suggested he could
only ensure the ceasefire lasted five months, after
which time he would be powerless to secure an
extension.

Cabinet Reshuffle Planned
(Al-Sabah Al-Jadeed)
Bahaa al-A'raji, a member of the United Iraqi
Alliance, has announced the prime minister,
Nuri al-Maliki, intends to stage a big cabinet
reshuffle in the near future. Al-A'raji said that
between ten to 12 ministers would lose their posts
because of poor performance. It's thought that the
oil ministry, one of security ministries and several
service ministries would be targeted.

Most of Iraqi Police "Infiltrated" by Militia
(Asharq al-Awsat)
Militias have infiltrated seventy per cent of the
Iraqi police, according to US training staff
assigned to the force. The head of the Police
Training group admitted that it might not be
possible to create a service that was free of the
influence of the militias.
According to the official, most of the infiltration
is by the Mahdi Army of Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadir.
In the al-Shu'la police station in Baghdad, for
instance, the walls are covered with slogans
praising the cleric.
