UK: The Kurdish man who killed his ex-girlfriend in Court 2.11.2006
By Chloe Griffiths

Newcastle, November 2, -- A man appeared in court yesterday charged with the murder of nursery nurse Samantha Anderson who was stabbed to death in a frenzied attack in a Tyneside tower block.

Iraqi-Kurd Ari Abdullah 29, of Vallum Court in Elswick, Newcastle, who is understood to be Samantha's former boyfriend, was remanded in custody by Newcastle magistrates and is due appear at the city's Crown Court next week.

Ms Anderson was found dead at a ground floor flat in Vallum Court, off Westgate Road, on Monday night.

The 29-year-old, who originally trained to be a hairdresser, was working at the Buffer Bear Nursery in Newcastle's Neville Street just hours before her death.

After finishing work at the nursery, near Central Station, she made the 20-minute walk back to the flat, just off Westgate Road, where she had lived until August this year.

Firefighters found her dead in the living room later that night.

She had been repeatedly stabbed.

Crews had been called to the 20-storey block of flats after a friend, who was visiting, noticed a powerful smell of petrol coming through the door.

When he failed to get a response he called the fire brigade, who found the flat had apparently been doused in petrol.

Ms Anderson's parents Peter and Valerie, who are divorced, but both live in Cramlington, and her sisters Dawn and Jacqueline and brother Gary paid tribute to her last night.

They described her as a shy, pretty girl, who was reserved, but also playful, with a love of arts and crafts.

As she grew up she become more outgoing and often enjoyed a night out with her mother.

A statement by the family said: "Samantha was loved dearly by everyone around her.

"When given advice she understood, but she had her own mind and endeavoured to solve a situation her way.

"Samantha did no wrong, she could not harm anyone, being reserved she never passed judgment."

Ms Anderson had previously lived at the flat in Vallum Court with her Iraqi-Kurd boyfriend before the relationship broke down a few months ago.

She had met the 29-year-old, who is seeking asylum in England, in 2003, and they had moved into the flat together the following year.

The couple split up in August of this year, and Ms Anderson moved back in with her mother in Cramlington.

It is understood her partner's asylum status ran out on Tuesday, but he had applied to renew it and the matter was under consideration by the Home Office.

Police are now focusing on piecing together her lifestyle in the weeks and months leading up to her death.

Det Supt Wade said: "We need to build up a picture of Samantha's lifestyle in the months leading up to her murder.

"I would appeal to any friends, work colleagues, anyone who knew her or anyone who knew anything about her most recent past, to get in touch.

"Samantha's family have told us she was a happy-go-lucky type of person, very thoughtful and creative, and they are devastated by her death."

Mr Ari Abdullah will appear at Newcastle Crown Court on November 8.
