Love and marriage in Erbil
According to official statistics, the divorce rate
is increasing in Erbil.
Nearly 147 people were divorced at Erbil Central
Court between January and June this year. This is
more than twice the number of the same period in
2005 when only 70 divorce cases were registered.
"Year after year divorce rates are increasing in
Erbil," said Hassan Ramazan Mustafa, director of
Erbil Court statistics department.
However, the registered number of the court is not
the total number of divorce cases that have taken
place in Erbil. Many other couples separate
according to the Islamic law, outside the framework
of the secular legal system. In these cases, it is
the Islamic clergy which decide the outcomes,
normally to the advantage of the man. Mr. Mustafa
explained that another 146 people divorced by
Mullahs in Shari'a courts. Although, he pointed out
that once a judgment was rendered the case was then
brought to the secular courts and reviewed.
