Kirkuk: New committee to supervise oil
distribution
Kirkuk's Governor Abdul Rahman created a committee
to supervise the distribution of oil and gas to the
people, local media reported.
According to a source in the Governor's office, the
committee has already met with the oil distributor
to discuss the price and lack of all oil products.
Governor Rahman informed the distributors that they
must follow specific rules to prevent having their
licenses revoked, said the source.
Sulaimaniyah: No one will be illiterate in
Sulaymaniya in three years – official
An official affirmed on Monday that illiteracy will
be totally eradicated in three years' time in
Kurdistan Sulaimaniyah.
"The illiteracy eradication project in the province
will attain its goal by the advent of 2009," Umid
Kaka Rash, the director of illiteracy eradication
and adult education department in Sulaimaniyah, said
on Monday.
According to a 2002 survey conducted by the
Kurdistan education ministry, 27 percent of
Sulaimaniyah residents over the age of ten years
were illiterate, nearly 429,000 of the inhabitants
in Sulaimaniyah.
Mr. Rash explained that seven percent of this rate
are above the age 45 and those who have lost the
ability to learn. "As for the rest, we are working
day and night to provide them with education." "We
have finalized the first stage successfully during
the 14 past months as five percent of this rate
(60,000) learnt to read and write, while the
illiteracy of the remaining number will be
eradicated if they responded to our calls," Mr. Rash
noted.
The Sulaimaniyah illiteracy eradication and adult
education department was founded in 2003 as part of
education department. It now has 600 centers all
over the province.
Sulaimaniyah is a province within Iraq’s Kurdistan
autonomous region with population estimated at
1,729,373 in 2005.
Duhok patients sent to Italy
Hevy Organization in Dhok announced that 49 patients
were sent to Italy.
A source from the Hevy Organization in Dhok
announced that 49 patients were sent to Italy, local
media reported last week.
Pakshan Ali Aziz, head of the organization, told the
independent news agency Voices of Iraqi, "According
to the agreement between us and the college of
pathology in the Foreign Ministry of Italy, 49
patients have been sent to Italy.
They cannot be treated in Iraq; some have
Thalassemia." Aziz also said, "We sent 108 patients
to Italy in two different stages, as well as 140
other patients who were sent to Baghdad at the
beginning of this year by the Nazdar base of the
organization.
Most of the patients are elderly and others are
children and are suffering from heart conditions or
nerve problems." Aziz said the Hevy Organization
pays for all transfer costs to Baghdad and the
medical treatments of the patients.
Other patients who are going to Italy will receive
monetary assistance from the regional government and
the Italian authorities. The Hevy Organization (the
organization of the development of Kurdistan) was
established in 2006 in Duhok.
They specialize in the development of certain
projects and assist patients who need to receive
treatment from outside the region.
Second Norwegian Company wishes to invest in oil
in Kurdistan
The foreign companies to come and work in Kurdistan
Region.
The Norwegian Stat Oli Company declared that, for
the purpose of better development of oil fields in
Kurdistan Region.
The company has arranged a number of interviews with
both the Iraqi and Kurdistani governments, local
media reported on Tuesday.
Peter Melba, head of foreign affairs for the
company, stated that Kurdistan is a big source of
oil, but the company is hesitant to sign on due to
the unstable security in Iraq.
The Norwegian DNO Company was the first foreign
company to sign a contract with the Kurdistan
government following the Iraqi peace process, and is
currently working in Zhako oil fields in Kurdistan
Region. That project is expected to start generating
oil by early 2007.
The stable security situation in Kurdistan and the
new investment law have been major factors in
attracting a vast number of foreign companies to
come and work in Kurdistan Region.
Kirkuk: Huge fire in North Oil Company after
mortar attack
Kirkuk, – Huge fire erupted on Monday in the
concentration unit when two mortar rounds fell onto
the North Oil Company in Kirkuk, a security source
said.
“Two mortar shells were fired Monday afternoon on
the North Oil Company and caused huge fire in the
company’s concentration unit,” said.
The source said “fire fighters, security forces and
multi-national forces are endeavoring to put off
fire.”
Human rights organization responds to Turkish
Foreign Minister's interview
The EU members refuse Turkey's quest to join the EU.
After the threatening speech from the Foreign
Minister of Turkey directed at Kurdistan, a human
rights organization in Dohuk presented a memorandum
to America.
The European Union (EU), and the international
community, expressing their dissatisfaction.
They also requested that the UN re-validate
resolution 688. The memorandum described the
interview as interference with the security in Iraq
and Kurdistan.
The organization asked that all human rights
activists take a stand against the Foreign
Minister's speech, and that EU members refuse
Turkey's quest to join the EU.
Kirkuk's Tal Jalaw site target for numerous
encroachments, says archaeologist
Kirkuk, – An archaeologist in Kirkuk warned on
Monday against repeated encroachments upon the
archaeological site of Tal Jalaw in the southern
part of the city.
"The Culture Ministry’s Archaeology and Heritage
Department in Kirkuk has registered infringements on
Tal Jalaw, one of the most important archaeological
sites that is located 15 km southwest of Kirkuk,"
Iyad Tareq, the department director, said.
Tareq said some people built their homes in the
ancient site that dates back to the Assyrian era and
boasts many secrets of history.
"The department laid a fence on the peripheries of
the site but the number of encroachments by the
locals increased recently," he complained.
The Assyrian Empire began 2400 B.C. on the land of
Assyria that is located in north Mesopotamia and
spans four countries: In Syria it extends west to
the Euphrates river; in Turkey it extends north to
Harran, Edessa, Diyarbakir, and Lake Van; in Iran it
extends east to Lake Urmi, and in Iraq it extends to
about 157 kilometers south of Kirkuk
Kurdish bodybuilders training in Erbil for
Masters championship
Erbil, – Iraq's bodybuilding team is getting ready
in Erbil, the capital of Iraq's Kurdistan region, to
take part in the Masters bodybuilding championship
within the 15th Asian Games 2006, to be hosted by
Doha in mid-December.
"Five bodybuilders are due to participate in the
tournament," Dana Juma, a member of the (Iraqi)
bodybuilding federation, said on Sunday.
"We offered the Iraqi team all possible facilities
and provided them with the necessary training
equipment to participate in Doha's Masters
championship," added Dana.
He said the training program was supposed to be held
in Egypt but some problems prevented the team from
traveling.
