Sport Foundation Scores Big for Salahaddin
University
Gymnastics teachers at the College of Physical
Education at Salahaddin University received a
donation from the Salah Rahman Sport Foundation in
Erbil.
The Salah Rahman Sport Foundation aims to give a
lift to gymnastics and sports programs in the
region. Established in July of this year in London,
its goal is to develop sports and help athletes by
providing facilities and coaching. The Foundation is
registered with UK charity commission.
The foundation came into existence after the deaths
of Sami Abdul-Rahman and his eldest son, Salah. Mr.
Abdul -Rahman was a high-ranking official in the
Kurdistan government. Both were killed in a suicide
explosion in Erbil on February 1, 2004. Salah was
very dedicated to athletics, and his family decided
to establish the foundation to continue their
association with sports in honor of Salah and his
father.
"As we lost Sami and Salah, we felt it was our duty
to fulfill Salah's wish. He loved sports," said
Fawzia Rahman, Salah's mother. "He visited the
College of Physical Education every chance he got,
but God took him."
The College of Physical Education, established in
1989, is lacking the basic required facilities of a
functioning sports department. "We don't have enough
classrooms, we need a closed stadium for winter
sports and closed swimming pool," said Dr. Azad
Hassan, assistant to the college dean. He said that
they must rent the swimming pool every time they
have swimming class. Dr. Hassan welcomes assistance
from governmental or nongovernmental sport
organizations to advance sports at the college and
in all of Kurdistan...
No more dusty newspapers to be found on the
ground in Erbil
It has been nearly two weeks the Municipality of
Erbil, upon a request by the City Governorate, has
set up 9 special spots, including cabin shops for
the purpose of selling newspapers.
Newspaper sellers and distributors consider the
$15-thousand plan a great idea for they had no
specific place set aside for them in order to sell
issued newspapers and magazines.
"It has almost been two years that we have been
asking to have a place provided to us, and
fortunately, they have now decided to do so," says
Ashti Sherko, the owner of one of these shops. "We
are grateful for that and we hope that such service
will continue to take place."
Despite people's satisfaction with this recent
decision, there still seem to be some concerns and
criticism.
Mahmoud Khalil, an ordinary citizen, considers this
late development as taking a civilized measure to
solve problems. "I ask that the government sets up
such cabin shops near the university colleges for
students to be able to put their hands on the
paper(s) they like easily and quickly," says Mahmoud.
Abdul-Nasir Madi, another individual, however,
recommends that there be a wall with all the
important pages of newspapers posted on it. He says
this is something extremely important to do,
particularly for those who cannot afford to buy the
newspaper everyday.
Tahir Abdullah, Deputy Governor of Erbil spoke of
the plan saying that they took the initiative to
carry it out for the main purpose of changing the
city's overall image and giving it a civilized look.
He added that newspapers were previously being sold
on the ground where they would be mixed with layers
of dust, and hence the decision of assigning a
budget for the matter...
