Erbil hosts international short films festival in December 2006

Erbil – The Iraqi Kurdistan city of Erbil will host an international short films festival in mid-December, a source at
Kurdistan culture ministry said on Saturday.

"The culture ministry in Kurdistan region would organize this festival, where 25 productions of the Kurdistan's cinema department will take part along with 25 international short films from the United States, Britain, France, Norway, Belgium and other countries," Mr. Shakhwan Idris of the department said yesterday.

Mr. Idris added that the festival would continue for four days, after which winning movies will receive awards of
appreciation.

Car bomb kills three at funeral in Iraq's Kirkuk - Reuters
KIRKUK - Iraq, -- A suicide car bomb killed three people and wounded 22 when it exploded near a funeral procession in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk on Sunday, police said.

The attack occurred on the same day as a car bomb in Hilla, south of Baghdad, killed 22 people.
The former Iraqi president forced about 250,000 Kurdish residents to give up their homes to Arabs in the 1970s, to "Arabize" the city and the region's oil industry.

Kirkuk city is not under the full control of Kurdistan Regional Government administration. A referendum is to be held in late 2007 to decide whether the oil-rich Kurdish province should be annexed to the safe semiautonomous Kurdistan region in Iraq's north.

The Gelawej festival for cultural to start on 22.Nov.2006 in Sulaimaniyah

The 10th Gelawej Festival for cultural, and literary to start in Sulaimaniyah city on 22 November under the slogan (peace and freedom, creativity tent).

Irfan Ahmad, secretary in the administrative of Gelawej cultural and literary center, that the festival will held for a week and will be attended by about 40 Kurdish, Arab and Turkey men of letters.

He pointed out that the festival includes two daily meetings in the fields of poetry, stories and literary research and intellectual property.

He added that awards will be given to the works that win in the competition organized by the festival, the value of awards for the 1st place will be 3 million dinars, the 2nd will win 2 million dinars and the third is 1 million dinars.
"1USD = 1470 IQD.

He explained that a committees were formed to evaluate the submitted works to the festival.

The Gelawej center for cultural, and literary was founded in 1996 under the auspices of the office of democratic organizations belongs to Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) which is headed by Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, with five branches in several parts of the Kurdistan region, and has a membership of about 600 Kurdish writers and men of letters and issuing a monthly magazine entitled (New Gelawej).

Gelawej is a Kurdish word means "morning star". There were a magazine behalf Gelawej issued in the 1930s.
