Kurdish gum: A long tradition of rich outcomes
CULTURE: People like Muhammad Ali Hamajan and his
three friends try to manage their lives for the
coming winter.
Despite the fact that the slopes of Mount Chala-Rash
have been heavily cultivated with land mines, they
still rent an area there for 600,000 Iraqi Dinars.
In July, the four men, taking their clothes and
rations for 45 days, said farewell to their family
and friends and traveled for several kilometers to
the mountainous area north of their village. They
take natural Kurdish gum from the Kazwan trees. Tens
of other villagers like themselves go and meet there
to collect gum annually.
"Our business is a very tough one," Muhammad says,
but he confirms that it bears a good income.
Villagers in many areas in Kurdistan mainly depend
on these types of natural products found in their
regions and they still use old, habitual mechanisms
to collect these products.
Kazwan trees, mostly known in the Kurdish
countryside as "Daraban" grow naturally in the
mountainous areas.
These trees ooze a specific liquid called, "Bineshti
Kurdi" or the Kurdish Gum. Arriving at this
specified location, they build up headquarters for
rest before they start their work by filtering a
sufficient amount of soil.
Pishteewan Mahmud, a 15 year-old boy, uses his
donkey to bring the workers water for 10,000 Iraqi
Dinars a day. After mixing the soil they have
filtered with the water brought to them by
Pishteewan to make clean mud, the workers fix the
clay around each tree to make bowls to hold the
liquid gum seeping out of the trees....
