Erbil, Kurdistan
Region (Iraq), November 6, -- Rescue and recovery
workers in the autonomous northern Iraqi region of
Kurdistan were on Monday searching for survivors
after three days of torrential rain prompted
flooding in which at least 20 people are believed to
have died.
Sunday's flooding also caused extensive damage to
property and to infrastructure in the region. In one
incident, a house collapsed killing 11 of the 13
people inside, while a separate building collapse
killed a woman and three men.
The flooding damaged walls in schools and mosques
and swept away vehicles including cars and
bulldozers, witnesses said, while two children were
reported killed Friday after the roof of their home
caved in.
Suspension bridges into one Kurdish village were
destroyed, making it difficult for emergency aid to
reach those affected.
Two police officers in the Kurdish capital Erbil,
350 kilometres north of Baghdad, were missing
following the flood, colleagues said.
In Sulaimaniyah, many evacuated their residences,
leaving their houses behind after the flood
destroyed furniture and household appliances.
Dams were built to deflect the flow of the water
from certain areas.
VOI reported today that scores of Iraqi Kurds were
killed or went missing as the huge torrents of the
floods swept across parts of the (northern Iraqi)
province of Erbil, the capital of Kurdistan Region,
officials said on Monday.
"Huge floods swept last night the mountain village
of Bilah , 100 km north of Erbil, destroying nine
houses and damaging others,” Khalifan district
mayor, Mr. Jinkawar Khalid, said.
Mr. Khalid said "six bodies have been so far found
and scores of people went missing."
The Iraqi Red Crescent Society offered aid to the
villagers there, Mr.Khalid added.
Meanwhile, an official from Joman district, 160 km
northeast of Erbil, said "several people were killed
and an unidentified number of them were reported
missing as huge floods swept away the district last
night."
"The floods caused the collapse of eight bridges and
destroyed a mosque while roads connecting 16 nearby
villages were blocked" the Joman district official
said.
