Former Iranian President Khatami against Kurdish government in Kurdistan 18.11.2006
By Vladimir van Wilgenburg, a non-Kurdish writer from Netherlands

November 18, 2006

Former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami, in Turkey to attend the UN backed “Alliance of Civilizations” meeting in Istanbul on Monday, visited the Turkish city of Konya on Tuesday. There he showed anti-Kurdish sentiments.

According to the Turkish news agency IHA he told the press that he did not approve of efforts to establish a Kurdish government in Iraqi-Kurdistan and that he thought all factions in Iraq should come together to establish a common government.

Khatami is regarded as Iran's first reformist president, since the focus of his campaign was on the rule of law, democracy and the inclusion of all citizens of Iran in the political decision-making process.

But although he is seen as a reformist, not much changed for the Kurdish issue in Iranian Kurdistan. Except for a higher political participation of Kurds in Iranian politics and small reforms.

Khatami served from 1997 till 2005 and was succeeded by extreme president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Now there are no more reforms in Iranian Kurdistan and Iran.
