President Barzani meets U.S. National Security Advisor 1.11.2006 

 

Erbil, Kurdistan Region (Iraq), November 1, -– Kurdistan President Massoud Barzani met on Tuesday night the U.S. National Security Advisor Steve Hadley who arrived in Erbil on a surprise visit, a government source said on Wednesday.

Hadley was received at Erbil International airport last night by Kurdistan's Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani, the source said.

Hadley later went to Salah Eddin resort to meet Barzani away from the media.

The Kurdish authorities did not announce Hadley's visit to the autonomous Kurdistan region.

Hadley has arrived in Iraq on Monday on a previously unannounced visit.

Biography of Stephen Hadley, Assistant to the President For National Security Affairs

Stephen J. Hadley was sworn in as Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (commonly referred to as the National Security Advisor) on January 26, 2005. During President George W. Bush's first term, Mr. Hadley served as the Assistant to the President and Deputy National Security Advisor.

Mr. Hadley served as a senior foreign and defense policy advisor to then-Governor Bush during the 2000 Presidential Campaign and worked in the Bush-Cheney Transition on the National Security Council.

Previous to this position, he was a partner in the Washington, D.C. law firm of Shea & Gardner and a principal in The Scowcroft Group, Inc., an international consulting firm.

Mr. Hadley served as the Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Policy from 1989-1993. In that position, he had responsibility for defense policy toward NATO and Western Europe, on nuclear weapons and ballistic missile defense, and arms control. He also participated in policy issues involving export control and the use of space.

Mr. Hadley served as Secretary of Defense Cheney's representative in talks led by Secretary of State Baker that resulted in the START I and START II Treaties.

Mr. Hadley has been a member of the Department of Defense Policy Board, the National Security Advisory Panel to the Director of Central Intelligence, and the Board of Trustees of Analytical Services, Inc. ("ANSER").
