Ireland: Sligo hosts welcome nine Iranian Kurdish families 11.10.2006
By Siobhan Breatnach

Sligo, Ireland, -- Sligo families have officially welcomed a group of Iranian Kurdish refugees into the community.

The first meeting of the families, who are taking part in the Sligo Volunteer Centre (SVC) Family Befriending Project took place in the Northside Community Centre in Forthill at the weekend.

The event consisted of fun and cultural activities for the ten Sligo-based volunteer families who have each been matched with an Iranian Kurdish family.

Last weekend the families were introduced to each other for the first time, where they got a chance to mingle with each other and learn more about both life here and in the refugee camps where the Kurdish families had previously lived.

The nine Iranian Kurdish families came to Sligo at the beginning of last month to make a new home. Their children have now started in local schools and the older members of the families are taking part in English lessons.

SVC and event organiser Ciara O’Hara said: “It was a great day. It was lovely to see the group who are new to Sligo settling into life here and making new friends.

“It is wonderful that we have local families who are willing to meet up with these families and make the transition to their new life a little easier.

“We also had other volunteers who came along on the day to offer their assistance in any way they could, helping with refreshments, as well as general set up and clean up of the venue.”

Over the coming months this sharing of cultural experiences will be developed through further activities organised by the Sligo Volunteer Centre.

The next paired families event is an adult and child arts and crafts workshop on Saturday, October 21, in the
Northside Community Centre from 2-5pm.

Anyone interested in getting involved in facilitating arts groups or assisting facilitators should contact Ciara on 071-9111813.
